I opened the door to my house and walked over to my couch. I slumped down into it and slowly unfolded the letter. I could see the familiar handwriting of his scribbled on the paper.
Kaitlyn,
I thought I saw you at the game today, and if you did get this letter than I was right. Please don’t worry about me I’ll be fine. I probably won’t be able to play in the next few games, but I will live. I know it must be really hard for you to be reading this letter after what I did to you, but you must know that I had to. I wished you had answered the calls I made to your parents’ house. I could’ve explained everything to you, but I guess I hurt you to much. I torture myself by thinking of what I did to you, Kait. I really want to fix this. Please call me if you get the time. I know you still have my number.
Love,
Marc-Andre Fleury
I put the note on the coffee table then walked to my bedroom. I changed clothes and took off my make-up then crawled into my bed trying not to think of Marc.
***
I woke up the next morning and jumped into the shower. I finished with that then blow dried my hair. I walked into my bed room looking at the empty bed.
Memory
I woke beneath cold sheets. I walked into my bathroom and looked into the mirror. My face and eyes were stained with tears. I got into a hot shower. I got out of the shower when the water started to cool. I wrapped the towel around my body then took another and dried my hair halfway. I dropped the hair towel to the ground then walked into my bedroom. I opened my closet door and looked into it. I looked down to my closet floor and saw a penguin’s sweat shirt. I picked it and threw at my trash can. It was marc’s and I couldn’t deal with anything of his right now. He left just a week ago and I still wasn’t over him. I still didn’t have the nerve to even watch the games on TV. I grabbed some shorts and t-shirt then slipped them on and walked down stairs.
End
I pushed the memory out of my mind and strolled over to my closet. I slipped a long sleeve T and semi-nice jeans over a pair of red and black dotted bra and underwear. I walked down stairs and grabbed a breakfast bar and walked to my BMW. I jumped in and started the car then headed out towards work. I arrived at the animal shelter within five minutes. I know it’s not the best job, but I love it. I walked into the building.
“Hey Amy.” I said to my friend walking behind the front desk and setting down my purse.
“Hey. So what did the letter say?” She asked turning towards me.
“He said he wanted me to call him. He want to make it better.” I said quickly.
“Well why don’t you? You know this is going to happen eventually.” She said.
“I know. I just don’t think I’m ready yet.” I said walking over to one of the new puppies that had come in.
“You have had five years to get ready, Kait.” She said following me with food and water in her hands. I walked back to the front of the building when I heard my cell start to ring. I pick it up and looked at the caller ID.
“Hey mom, what’s up?” I said.
“Nothing I just wanted to see how you were doing.” She replied.
“Everything is fine, mom. Just like it always is.” I said annoyed because she always asked the same question.
“So guess who called this morning?” She said. I was starting to worry who would have called.
“I don’t know, mom. Who?” I asked.
“Marc-Andre Fleury.” She said. I let out a sigh.
“What did you tell him?” I asked.
“Well he wanted to talk to you, but I told him that you weren’t here at the time. Then he asked at what number he could contact you. Instead of giving him your number I just told him to drop by the animal shelter.” She said.
“Oh sorry mom, I have a customer. Bye. Love you.” I said then hung up before she could say anything else. I didn’t have a customer I just didn’t want to talk to her anymore.
“Amy. My mom told Marc to drop by the shelter. How could she do that?” I said pacing in front of her.
“Like I said you two need to talk about what happened.” She said walking around me to help the customer at the desk. I walked to the back as Amy continued with the customer. I cleaned some cages, fed some animals, the routine thing without being interrupted by Marc. It was an hour before closing time when a man I knew all to well walked in.
“Hey Marc.” Amy said walking to the back to leave Marc and me alone. He gave her a friendly glance then walked over to me.
“Hi stranger.” He said trying to be funny. I didn’t laugh.
“Hey.” I said in a flat tone.
“I really want to fix this, but this is not the place to do it.” He said.
“What place is? A restaurant?” I asked looking down.
“Not a public place. How about my house 6:30 tomorrow?” He said.
“Why your house?”
“Please just give me a chance.”
“I gave you millions of chances but you blew them when you left.”
“Please. I’ll make you dinner.” I laugh at that.
“It’s nice to see you smile again.” He said.
“OK. I’ll come on one condition.”
“And what is that?”
“That you order takeout.”
“Deal.” He said laughing. We said our goodbyes, and he walked out the door to his car and I walked to get my stuff. I thought of something after he left. How am I going to get to his house? I picked up my phone and dialed his number. For some reason I could never forget it.
“So you can’t wait can you?” He said sarcastically.
“Yes, I can, but I don’t know where your house is.” I said.
“Oh I forgot to tell you. One of my drivers will pick you up at your house around 6:20.”
“Well, that’s all I need to know, so goodnight Marc.”
“Goodnight Kait.” He said before hanging up. I drove home and slept soundly for the first time since Marc left me.
